The most dramatic experience the TIS project could possibly offer teachers is the opportunity to experience suborbital spaceflight themselves and if all goes according to plan this will happen within a couple of years. Several companies who are actively developing spacecraft capable of fulfilling this dream have generously donated free flights we can use to fly a small number of teachers. Our goal is to find the resources to fly many, many more.
Our intention is to combine the content of our three existing workshops with the safety training required by the spaceflight providers into the summer experience of a lifetime. All teachers we fly into space will be asked to make a five year commitment to stay in America’s classrooms. They will also serve as ambassadors for all the various elements of the Teachers in Space project and an inspiration to young adults considering STEM teaching as a career.
